The PLAYground Project: An Educational Curriculum Using Playground Equipment
This presentation features an overview and research results of the PLAYground (Play and Learning Activities for Youth) project. The PLAYground project was a large research trial that assessed the implementation and effectiveness of integrating the PlayOn! playground curriculum in afterschool programs in a large school district outside of Phoenix, Arizona. In partnership with PlayCore, researchers from Arizona State University adapted the PlayOn! curriculum to include a social-emotional learning focus, trained staff to integrate the curriculum, worked with school partners and experts from PlayCore to redesign school playgrounds, and measured the impact of using the curriculum on children’s physical movement and social-emotional skills. Allison Poulos

Allison Poulos is an Assistant Professor in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University. Her training is in community development and dissemination and implementation science and has an interest in physical activity behavior. Her research focuses on connecting community systems and integrating physical activity into daily living to support health and well-being, with a focus on school and neighborhood settings. Prior to working at ASU, she spent more than a decade as a public school health and physical education and led parks and recreation programs each summer.
Pamela Hodges Kulinna

Pamela Hodges Kulinna is a professor in Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University in the USA. Her doctoral training was completed at the University of Illinois in Kinesiology with a specialization in Physical Education Pedagogy. Her M.S. and B.S. degrees in Physical Education and Human Movement Studies were completed at the University of Oregon. Dr. Kulinna is a member of the National Academy of Kinesiology (#508). She is also a research fellow in the Internationale des Ecoles Supérieures d'Education Physique - International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education and the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America.
