Playgrounds as a Hub for Active, Healthy Schools
There are a wide array of physical, cognitive, and psychological benefits that can be derived from active play. School playgrounds are an ideal setting to promote active play and can be capitalized upon as a hub for comprehensive school physical activity programs (CSPAP). The purpose of this webinar is to introduce latest research and strategies that can be used to maximize the use of playgrounds to promote an active school culture.
- Identify at least three benefits of active play.
- Summarize how school playgrounds can contribute to the five components of CSPAP.
- Describe two strategies that can maximize the value of active play on school playgrounds.
- Create an advocacy statement to champion the role schools play in student health and wellness.

Russ is a passionate speaker on topics of comprehensive health and wellness and a committed champion of research translation and application. He is currently PlayCore’s Research & Community Impact Strategist dedicated to helping professionals turn research into practice for community health impact. Dr. Dauenhauer directs the UNC Active Schools Institute, a community-engaged and applied research group focused on preparing physical activity leaders and promoting evidence-based practices in schools. His research interests lie at the intersection of school-based physical activity promotion and effective data-use. He has published 35 juried manuscripts and delivered more than 100 professional presentations at state, national, and international conferences. Dr. Dauenhauer lives in Fort Collins, Colorado and loves to play golf and fish in his free time.
